Newsletter December 2006

Dear Committee Members,

Our last newsletter of the year comes with the best wishes for the holiday season and for a happy new year!

The end of the year is a good time to take a little bit of a historical perspective. If you have some extra time over the holidays, maybe you are interested in reading two "historical" and relatively rarely cited papers on sampling-based motion planning. The first paper from 1990 alludes to randomization in motion planning, the narrow passage problem, and pseudo-random numbers for sampling; the second one from 1996 alludes to diffusion-based motion planning. If you are interested, you can find both papers here.

A recent Stanford graduate, Mitul Saha, who was advised by Jean-Claude Latombe, added his thesis to the Wiki. It includes experiments with two PUMAs tying a knot with rope. The motion was computed using a sampling-based motion planner. Take a look!

The paper submission deadine for Robotics: Science and Systems is coming up on January 15, 2007.

If you have not done so already, please add yourself to the directory. (How? Please see below.)

Please spread the word about this committee! Recruit new members, or suggest activities!

Yours truly,

Oliver Brock
Tsutomu Hasegawa
Steven LaValle
